Sea Kayak Safety and Rescue Course
June, 2010
Sandy Creek Park, Athens. GA

Skills covered will include bracing, wet exits, bow and side rescues, assisted re-entries, and solo re-entries. Also perhaps some towing, and possibly some individual work on rolling if time permits. The (in-)famous kayak rescue relay competition will probably make a re-appearance. I'm hoping for a couple of celebrity guest instructors, too.

Participants will need a sea kayak, skirt, paddle, PFD, paddlefloat, and pump; the last two can be shared. Also bring a 15 foot piece of 1/4”-3/8” nylon rope. Noseplugs or diving masks are a plus if you don’t like to have your face under water. Plan to get very wet.

The registration fee for this event will be a non-refundable check in any amount (FYI, 21 folks gave a total of over $1000 in 2007) made out to the Nature Conservancy, plus some food to share for lunch. The potluck lunch buffet at this course is historic. Mail the check to me at 190 Deer Ridge, Athens, GA 30605. Might be a good idea to include your email address. You are signed up when I receive your check.

We'll be doing this one on lovely Lake Chapman, in Sandy Creek Park, just north of Athens on 441. Map here. Let's meet at 9:30 AM.

There are a few pictures from a previous year here. It looks like a lot of carnage, but everyone is working with a buddy and well-supervised.

Enrollment is limited. Please email Steve Cramer or call (706-540-3379) for information.

And remember, we're practicing re-entries. It's not a rescue until these guys show up.
